What Is Meditation?

Meditation is both a process and a state of mind that triggers the unfoldment of your true Self. A person needs to travel down a road of preparation before beginning meditation. Without the necessary preparation and concentration, one cannot reach a state of meditation.

How Do You Reach A State Of Meditation?

You can only reach a state of meditation with dedication, patience, perseverance and an attitude of surrender. Meditation comes after concentration and concentration comes after the withdrawal of the senses; the internalization of attention. When meditating, you will become aware of what is commonly known as the unconscious, while remaining fully alert. 

Concentration is the focus of attention toward a single point. To be able to reach a state of meditation, one must concentrate. Continuous concentration without disruption is key.

Meditation is the uninterrupted flow of one’s focus on a single point until awareness of the focused object and the process of focusing become absorbed into one other. Meditation is only uncovered through disciplined and consistent practice.

That elusive state of mind, known as meditation, already exists inside you. By training and disciplining your mind, you’ll learn to let go and no longer be seduced by your own negative or distorted thinking.

How Does Meditation Work?

The practice initially leads you to a state of relaxation, reducing your body’s need for oxygen, lowering your respiratory rate. Blood flow to our organs increases due to the relaxed body state, while your heart rate decreases.

Meditation changes your brain, helping you make sense of the array of disorganized thoughts cluttering your mind.When in a state of meditation, you’re able to direct your attention and build and strengthen neural connections in your brain. This ‘shaping of your brain’ via internal and external input is known as neuroplasticity; which is the term used for the brain’s ability to “rewire” itself. What this means is that you can  “upgrade” your brain and maximize your potential by practicing meditation.

How do I meditate?

First you must realize that meditation is entirely natural, everyone has access to it. You don’t have to be a great mystic or philosopher. Very little is required to start meditating. You’ll need to:

  • Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed, a place that is free of noise and distractions.
  • Sit in a comfortable position, wherein you can remain without moving for an extended period.
  • Refine your attitude towards being ready for meditation.
  • Choose a meditation technique that you will stick too for at least a few months.
  • This is if you practice every day, both morning and night.

Purpose of Meditation

Meditation is as a way of life, not a technique. The purpose of meditation is to ultimately lead one to the highest state of asamprajnata Samadhi. This however happens in three steps:

  • Calm the conscious mind.
  • Dissolve the unconscious imagery.
  • Go beyond the conscious and unconscious mind to the highest state, Samadhi.

This is done with an awareness of allowing without attachment or aversion. Through practicing meditation and going deeper into ourselves, we begin to realize for ourselves that we are one with the spirit, consciousness or whichever name you prefer to use.

The simple fact remains; you will not achieve success in meditation if you do not practice. My advice is simple:
